Cloud 101 series : What is Cloud Computing?
So you keep hearing the phrase “cloud computing” being thrown around and your response is, what is that? To keep it simple cloud computing is the distribution of computing services such as servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and more over the internet.
There is an entire industry built around cloud computing since these resources can be approached in different ways: PaaS, SaaS, IaaS, and hybrid cloud. All these letters are acronyms for cloud service models which were made to tailor to the user’s needs.
Cloud computing technology has made it easier for businesses that want to keep their data safely stored in a way that helps them save money in infrastructure. It’s a pay as you go service, think of it as anything you can rent like a house, apartment, etc. You pay for it as long and as much as you’re using it.
You can do many things with cloud computing such as developing apps, storing and backing data, host websites and blogs (just like this one), stream video and audio, analyze data and make predictions with it.
This may sound overwhelming because cloud computing comes in many forms but all cloud computing means is that you are using a network to store, manage, and process data instead of doing it in a local server or computer.
Another question you may have is, why is this necessary? The truth is that technology has advanced significantly and is not slowing down any time soon. With the amount of data and at the rate it’s being produced, cloud computing it essential. Anyone and anything is producing data now, including you. Laptops, cell phones, cars, basically anything that can produce information through technology.
Whether you know about it or not, you are also part of the tech world. If you’re curious to know more just keep reading this series.
